California ARCHES Hub Secures Nation’s First Federal Funding for Renewable, Clean Hydrogen

NovoHydrogen’s Antelope Valley Hydrogen 1 (AVH1) Project Included as Part of ARCHES Ecosystem

Golden, CO — August 6, 2024 — NovoHydrogen is proud to highlight its continuing collaboration with the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES) in California. ARCHES recently signed a $12.6 billion agreement, including up to $1.2 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and $11.4 billion in public and private matching funds. On July 16th, ARCHES officially signed a Cooperative Agreement with the DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations for the first phase of planning and development. NovoHydrogen’s Antelope Valley Hydrogen 1 (AVH1) project was selected as a non-federally funded partner last year to work with the ARCHES team to scale green hydrogen deployment for hard-to-abate industries in California.

“ARCHES is a pivotal initiative for California’s clean energy future. Our membership allows us to contribute to and benefit from collective advancements in clean hydrogen, underscoring our commitment to decarbonizing regional industries,” said Matt McMonagle, CEO of NovoHydrogen. “ARCHES offers significant benefits in terms of environmental sustainability, economic growth, community engagement, and technological innovation and we are excited to work with the ARCHES team on this initiative.”

NovoHydrogen’s Antelope Valley Hydrogen 1 (AVH1) project was selected through ARCHES’ open application process, which evaluates each project proposal on its own merit. AVH1 is planned to be a 27-tonnes-per-day green hydrogen facility located near Palmdale, CA slated to come online in 2028. NovoHydrogen will own and operate the facility on approximately 1,000 acres of land supplying green hydrogen to various customers through long-term hydrogen purchase agreements (HPAs) and is exploring offtake opportunities through the ARCHES H2 marketplace. The project includes the installation of up to 182 MW of electrolyzers, which will be powered by up to 235 MW of behind-the-meter solar power generation.

Clean hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources through a process called electrolysis, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. This method is inherently carbon-free, leveraging zero-carbon electricity from sources such as wind, solar, or hydro, and results in no associated carbon emissions. As a versatile fuel and feedstock, clean hydrogen plays a critical role in decarbonizing various industrial processes and sectors that are challenging to abate through other means, such as steel production, cement manufacturing, and aviation.

“The ARCHES Ecosystem brings together pioneers across the hydrogen value chain who collaborate on deployment, share best practices, and showcase cutting-edge solutions. NovoHydrogen and their project were carefully vetted and selected as an ecosystem partner due to their expertise, project parameters, and proven track record of sustainable and forward-thinking clean-hydrogen initiatives,” said Adam Weber, ARCHES Chief Technology Officer.
